What is TMJ Disorder?
We think everyone suffering from TMJ disorder should live without pain. We have remarkably easy and non-invasive solutions. However, before we correct your TMJ issues, we have to get to the root of the cause.
Your TMJ joints are very complex. If an imbalance occurs, or if any part of the system malfunctions, it can cause pain and inflammation leading to migraines, upper body pain and even hearing loss.
One of the primary contributors to TMJ syndrome is bruxism or clenching and grinding of the teeth. This clenching and grinding is divided into two categories: day and night bruxism. Daytime bruxers unconsciously clench their teeth, often when they feel tense, anxious, or under stress. People who grind their teeth at night usually are not aware of their habit and the possible problems that are occurring. Many times, they are not diagnosed with bruxism until complications occur.
Signs and symptoms of bruxism include:
- Sore facial muscles
- Chipped teeth
- Pain in the jaw joint (TMJ)
- Worn down, flattened teeth
- Cracked teeth-painful to bite
- Loose teeth
- Abfraction – a notch or groove worn in the tooth at the gum line, which often can be very sensitive or painful
